Panel 3. Social and cognitive aspects of contact-induced language change/Keelekontaktidest johtuvate keelemuutuste sotsiaalsed ja kognitiivsed aspektid

Social and cognitive aspects of contact-induced language change

The impact of intra- and extra-linguistic factors on language variation and change is one of the conference topic. Language contacts usually result in language change. On one hand, language contacts are contacts between several people, of whom at least one is bilingual; on the other hand, as Uriel Weinreich (1953: 71) has it, the locus of language contacts is a bilingual’s brain. At earlier stages cognitive and social approaches to multilingualism existed separately but during the recent decade it has become apparent that a synthesis of these approaches may prove useful (Backus 2012). Cognition is a reflection of experience, which is often of social nature; at the same time, cognition affects the way how one perceives social reality. We expect presentations focusing on the following topics:

  • Usage-based approaches to contact-induced language change
  • Multicompetence
  • Multilingual communication, including receptive multilingualism
  • Emergence of multilingual repertoires
  • Multilingual vs. monolingual language intuition.

Keelekontaktidest johtuvate keelemuutuste sotsiaalsed ja kognitiivsed aspektid

Üks konverentsi teemasid on keelesiseste ja keeleväliste tegurite mõju keelemuutustele ja –varieerumisele. Keelekontaktide tulemus on reeglina keelemuutus. Keelekontaktid on ühelt poolt kontaktid mitme inimeste vahel, kellest vähemalt üks on kakskeelne; teiselt poolt, Uriel Weinreichi (1953: 71) sõnul, keelekontaktide toimumiskoht on kakskeelne aju.

  • Mitmekeelne suhtlus, k.a. retseptiivne mitmekeelsus
  • Mitmekeelse repertuaari väljakujunemine
  • Mitmekeelne vs. ükskeelne keeletaju.
