Doctoral students, their supervisors but also master’s level students are warmly invited to the autumn school „Dialogues with environment“.

On November 21-22, 2019 Estonian Literary Museum organises a two-days autumn school “Dialogues with environment” in the conference center of Pühajärve Spa and Holiday Centre (www.pyhajarve.com/en). The event takes place in cooperation with the Graduate School of Linguistics, Philosophy and Semiotics, but other PhD students as well as master’s level students are also welcome.

As in other disciplines, topics related to the environment are increasingly topical in the humanities. The lectures and discussions of the autumn school approach the topic of environment in a broad and interdisciplinary sense: we look at respective language use, beliefs, emotions, fears, philosophies and lifestyles but also soundscapes and urban environment. Topics of the autumn school include challenges and possibilities by approaching environmental problems and other environment-related topics, by data collecting and processing, interdisciplinary publishing in scientific journals, presenting one’s research results to the broader society.

In addition to the Estonian researchers several experts from abroad are going to present lectures and workshops, for example:

• Minna Opas (Politics of relationality – Amazonian perspectives on human relationship with ’nature’),
• Ekaterina Velmezova , Kalevi Kull (Environmental dialogues and conversations around Tartu semiotics (with some hints to language sciences))
• Anna-Sophie Jürgens (The Parasite as Performer)
• Marjetka Golež Kaučič (An Ontological/Animal Turn in Science and Society and Zoo/Ecofolkloristics)
• Carlo Cubero (Soundscapes: The Simultaneous Perception and Design of the Sonic Experience)
• Kristel Kivari (The paranormal and the sacred on the landscape: hills, brinks and sacred groves in the changing tradition)
• Eve Rannamäe (Animals and their roles in ecology and culture: two case studies from zooarchaeology)
• Piret Voolaid (Language-folklore-environment. Animal riddles)

The trip from Tartu to Pühajärve will be organised with a rented bus. All participants are granted food and accommodation, Pühajärve has also nice possibilities for various recreation activities.

Doctoral students whose research topic is related to the environment are welcome to give a 20-minutes paper. Please inform about your interest in presenting a paper by October 15th; in case that you want to participate without a paper, the deadline of registration is November 1st (please send the registration form to the address: reet@folklore.ee). Final programme and information about reading materials will be sent by November 7th. Working languages are Estonian and English. Students can earn 2 credit points (ECTS) for participation or 3 credit points when additionally presenting a paper.
