The Estonian Literary Museum is a leading centre for Estonian Studies in Estonia; its aims include the preservation of Estonian language and culture, advancement of Estonian Studies and participation in international research and development activities. The Estonian Literary Museum functions as an integrated institution that consists of archival units and research groups. The main activities of the Estonian Literary Museum include basic and applied research mainly in the fields of folklore and the study of religions, research into literature, art and culture, cultural history, life writing, ethnomusicology and bibliography, as well as participation in the respective research and development activities in the field; strategic and systematic collection, long-term preservation and scholarly study of Estonian intangible cultural heritage; making availale the results of the scholarly research as well as source materials of the intangible cultural heritage in scholarly, educational and popularising publications as well as in mediation by digital environments and as a public service. The Estonian Literary Museum is old and dignified, yet at the same time it is a dynamic, future-oriented institution; it values traditions, directs and leads positive developments in the field and integrates innovative new technologies into activities related to the preservation of cultural heritage and its mediation to the public.

The venue is easily accessible by foot from the city centre, bus station, and train station. Public transport buses No 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 18, 20, 24 go through the city centre and stop at bus stops Riiamäe and Pauluse, which are close to the venue. A ticket for one trip can be bought from the bus driver for 1,50 EUR.

Finnair operates flights between Helsinki (FIN) and Tartu Ülenurme Airport (EST).

From the airport to Tartu

Tartu Ülenurme Airport (TAY) is located 11 km from Tartu and is accessible by taxi.

Travel by land

There is a bus service between Tartu and neighbouring countries in the south and east. The service is provided by Lux Express, Eurolines, and Ecolines.

Some buses between Tallinn–Tartu also have a scheduled stop at the airport. However, not all buses have on-demand stops at the airport, meaning that you should make sure to choose the correct line. Information on bus lines and stops can be found HERE. The airport bus station has a self-service ticket dispenser where you can buy tickets for buses stopping at the airport on the way to Tartu. The machine accepts card payments.

Tartu is also accessible by train from Tallinn (service provided by Elron) and the stop to board the train is Ülemiste. In order to get to the stop you have to leave the airport in the direction of Ülemiste shopping centre and pass through the shopping centre.
