A cat sat on the fence,
The cat asked from the fence:
“Where are you going, poor mouse,
Pulling this small sledge?”
“I’m going to cut firewood.”
“But what if a tree falls on you?”
“I’ll quickly crawl under the roots.”
“But what if you’ll get hungry?”
“I will eat aspen bark,
I will bite birch bark,
Thin pine bark.”
“But what if your belly swells up?”
“I’ll rub butter on it.”
“But from where will you get butter from?”
“From the old woman’s bin.”
“But from where does the old woman get it?”
“From the pouch of a young cow.”
“But from where will the young cow get it?”
“From a marsh flower and a field flower.”

The chain song tells a story of a mouse who went to the forest to make firewood and ended up curing its sick stomach with butter from an old woman. Chain songs were sometimes recited and, if the child happened to know the answers, were recited as a dialogue. The song is known in Finland, western Ingria, and Estonia.
