Meie isad ja emad on saarlased,
meretuuled meie mängukaaslased,
mängu väljaks meil kadakane karjamaa,
seal me hõiskame koos merelindudega,
:,: ümber saare käib lainte igavene mäng
saarel kindlalt seisab meie sõpruse ring. :,:
Kividest valge on saare põllumuld,
igapäevane leib meile kallim kui kuld,
ehkki saar nii kehv ja kivine,
siiski saarlasteks jääda tahame.
:,: Armas kodusaar, sulle me alati truud,
su lapsed meretuultes sirgunud. :,:
A lyrical song about the home island. Our mothers and fathers are islanders, the sea winds are our playmates and juniper pastures are our playground, where we sing along with the sea birds. Although our island is poor and rocky, we want to remain islanders.
Helmi Peegel, aged 41, Kiriku village [Valjala parish]. Recorded by O. Kõiva, I. Rüütel, R. Hansen in 1961. RKM, Mgn II 503 f [156].
