Traditional songs, dances and customs of Saaremaa

The examples of the black-and-white mute films of Saaremaa folklore on the publication's DVD were filmed during the 1961 expedition of the Folklore Archives of the Estonian Literary Museum. The recording of Mustjala wedding customs and Valjala dances was supervised by Herbert Tampere and assisted by Erna Tampere, Ottilie Kõiva and Ingrid Rüütel; the recording of the rest of the material was arranged by Ottilie Kõiva and Ingrid Rüütel. Richard Hansen was the camera operator; Mustjala wedding songs were recorded by Heino Pedusaar. Since the camera cassettes had to be changed every two minutes, only short bits of film could be shot. Editing the separately recorded sound to film turned out to be very difficult. Although full synchronization was never achieved, adding sound to the film provides a better idea of the reality.
The last part of the DVD was filmed 51 years later in 2012.
