Rääk oli oma pojad rukkipõllus üles kasvatanud. Lõikuse aeg jõudnud kätte. Kui ema läks välja toidust otsima, käskinud poegi tähele panna, mis peremees räägib, kui ta põllu veerde peaks tulema. Peremees tulnud poegadega ja rääkinud sedaviisi: "Juba on vili valmis. Homme kutsun sõpru kokku ja teen talgud." Kui nüüd õhtul vana rääk koju tulnud, vabisenud noored suure hirmu pärast ja rääkinud temale kõik ära, mis peremees oli ütelnud. Aga ema rahustanud: "Ärge kartke veel! Sest kes teise peale oma lootuse paneb, sellel ei ole veel õiget nõu." Varsti tulnud peremees teist korda ja juttki olnud teistsugune: "Juba rükki pudeneb, ei enam saa loota teiste pääle, vaid hakkame ise homme Jumala abiga oma tööd pääle." Kui nüüd vana rääk peremehe jutust kuulda saanud, ütelnud ta: "Nüüd on aeg, et läheme ja jätame pesa maha. Nüüd ta enam ei viivita, sest tal ei ole lootust teiste pääle!"
A crake had raised her baby birds in the rye field. It was a time of harvesting. When the mother went to seek food, she told her babies to listen to what the farmer said when he came near the field. The farmer came with his sons and said: “The harvest is ready. I will call my friends here tomorrow and we will work together.” When the old crake came home in the evening, the babies were trembling with fear and told their mother everything the farmer had said. Yet the mother calmed them down: “Don’t be afraid now! Because whoever relies on someone else, this one has no right plan.” Soon the farmer came the second time and now his talk was different: “The rye is dropping already. I can no longer rely on others. Let’s start tomorrow ourselves with God’s help.” When now the old crake heard about the farmer’s words, she said: “Now it’s a high time to go and leave our nest, for he will no longer wait as he doesn’t rely on others!”
