Better to Be on a Log than in Bed with a Young Man

Julius Paas Hargla (1965)

Kuulõ(-ks), kulla, miä ma kuku,
panõt tähele, miä map pajada!
Parõmb (om) maadap paku pääl,
keeritelle kivi pääl
ku õks peiu pehmen sängün,
kaasa vahtsõ kasuga all.
Piä(-ks) saa hädä peiusängün,
kahju vahtsõk kasuga all –
ei jõuat tohtrit terves tetä,
ei papip paranda.

Listen well, darling, to what I say,
pay attention to what I tell you!
It is better to sleep on a log,
to toss and turn on a rock,
than in the soft bed of a young man,
under your fellow's new fleece.
Soon you will get into trouble in the young man's bed,
find misfortune under your fellow's new fleece –
the doctors won't be able to make it better,
nor the curates cure it.
