The Bride's Lament to Her Brother

“Mõrsja ikminõ”
Vel´lokõnõ, neio sullõ-ks nu kumarda jalga,
neio sullõ, vel´lokõnõ, ma kumarda jalga,
meeli-ks -mari jäl maalõ paintõlõ,
meelimari, vel´lokõnõ, ma maalõ paintõlõ,
sullõ(-ks) kallu, vel´lokõnõ, nu kaala ümbrele,
sullõ(-ks) oiu, vel´lokõnõ, ma olgõ nõalõ,
Iäst tulõ, vel´lokõnõ(-ks), meil eräle minnäq,
kaugus minnä, vel´lokõnõ(-ks), meil kattõ hulka.
Kui(-ks) jätta, vel´lokõnõ, mul uma võõrasta,
kui(-ks) võtta, vel´lokõnõ, mul võõra umast!
Neio(-ks) sinno, vel´lokõnõ, ma painu pallõma,
hellätsille, vel´lokõnõ(-ks), nu sõnolõ heidä:
“Unõhtagu-i, vel´lokõnõ-ks, sa ubinde aigo,
minno(-ks) lasku-i, vel´lokõnõ, sa meelest mii-aigo!”
Before you dear brother I, a maiden, bow to the ground,
the darling of your heart, I bend myself down,
I will fall on your neck,
I will be carried by your shoulders.
We are to leave each other forever,
we have to go far away to be with others.
How can I be stranger to my own,
how can I make my own from strangers!
I, a maiden, bow and pray you,
with gentle words I beseech you:
“Do not forget me during the apple blossom time,
do not let me go from your mind during the honey season!”
